NFL CONFIDENCE POOLS

The classic rank-your-picks office game — how it works, where it creaks, and the flatter way to run the same idea.

Straight answer first: FootballPools does not offer ranked confidence scoring. Our full-slate format is Pick All— every game, against the spread, one point per correct pick, no ranking. If your group specifically wants to assign 16-down-to-1 confidence values, we're not the tool for that game. If what your group actually wants is the thing confidence pools are for, read on — you may need less machinery than you think.

HOW A CONFIDENCE POOL WORKS

A confidence pool is a full-slate pick'em with a weighting layer. Every week you pick the winner of every game — usually straight up — and then rank your picks by conviction. In a 16-game week, your surest pick gets 16 points, the next 15, down to 1 for the game you'd rather not have an opinion on. Correct picks earn their assigned value; wrong picks earn zero. Highest weekly total wins, and a season leaderboard usually runs alongside.

The ranking exists to solve straight-up pick'em's famous flaw: if every game is worth the same and there's no spread, everyone picks mostly favorites and the cards barely differ. Making players commit how much they believe in each favorite separates the field again — a missed 16-confidence pick is a disaster, so the big values force real decisions.

It works, and plenty of offices have run it for decades. It also has a cost that anyone who's played one knows: every single week, every player has to drag sixteen games into a full ranking. That's the chore that has half the pool submitting Thursday-morning default orders by November — and it's a lot of scoring surface for a commissioner to explain and defend.

The Flat Alternative: Pick All

Pick All keeps everything people like about a confidence pool — the full slate, the weekly winner, the season-long table, a reason to watch every window — and swaps the two pieces of machinery:

Ranking out, spread in

Instead of you weighting each game by conviction, each game carries a frozen point spread that levels the matchup itself. Every game becomes a genuine call — no free favorites, so no need to price them.

Every pick worth exactly 1 point

Correct pick, one point. Most points takes the week; ties share it. The scoring fits in a sentence, which means it never needs defending in the group chat.

The week is five minutes of picking instead of a ranking exercise, and a 12-of-16 Sunday reads as exactly what it is. Pushes score zero (shown as a push, not a miss), postponed games are excluded from your count, and a week where nobody scores has no winner — zero doesn't take a pot.

The honest trade: you lose the "how sure are you?" mini-game, which is genuinely fun for groups that like the extra decision. If that layer is the point for your group, a dedicated confidence product will fit better. If it was always a chore, Pick All is the same pool without it. How spread picks are graded →

Running a Pick All Pool

Create the pool, share the invite code, and the season runs itself for all 18 weeks of 2026: one frozen line per game that the whole pool plays, per-game deadlines (each pick locks at its game's kickoff or when the Sunday afternoon slate begins, whichever is first), automatic grading from live NFL data once the week completes, and reminders before every deadline. Entry fees are optional; where there's a pot, the commissioner collects and holds it and FootballPoolstracks who's paid.

Want a smaller weekly card with jackpot mechanics instead of the full slate? That's Pick 5 — five games, all-or-nothing, rollover pots.
